after years of being unavailable in north america, it seems that the 14th zatoichi movie, "zatoichi's pilgrimage" has finally had it's release (kinda)! the rights to the other 25 original movies were split between criterion, animeigo, and media blasters who each did their duty in making these great movies available on DVD. however, the 14th in the series was owned by miramax or something with the intention of having quentin tarantino remake it/lessen the character. thankfully, the 2003 takeshi kitano version of zatoichi negated that project, but left the original buried under disney-types who had no interest in releasing it...

...however, criterion has recently made many zatoichi movies available on-line for free via some USA exclusive robot called HULU - "zatoichi's pilgrimage" is among those listed! does this mean they also now have the rights to release the movie on DVD??? better be!

massive Zatoichi fan, so far I've seen near all of them available. Hulu is a beautiful thing in that respect

I am thinking that is how it will work. I have been following the break down of all the films very close, because there is was some buzz out of a film con. that one of the producers I work with went to and she told me they were talking about remastering them and putting them all back out in some large collection.

it would make sense to do something like that for bluray or so. thanks for the info, hangmansfable!

No worries, I find its hard to find people in the US that have a deep love for my blind massage giving swordsman, any chance I can talk about him I take.

you saw one of the old ones? maybe the newer? anyways, your life already exceeds the average level of excitements, don't it? this news is trivial!

i din't like the 2003 version when i first saw it, though the second time i appreciated it more. the character played by takeshi kitano seemed dull and pale compared to the original gregarious and dopey shintaro katsu version.
